With the mulching flap closed, the special mulching blade cuts the grass into fine pieces before being returned neatly to the lawn as a valuable nutrient. With the side discharge flap attached, the mower can tackle longer grass, discharging the lawn clippings to the side without the need to stop to empty a catcher.
